Court appointed Interviewer: Burris appeared to be “The filthiest human I had ever seen. His neck was gray. The back of his hands were rusty, and his fingernails were black deep into the quick.”
Burris (Recorded testimony): My name is Burris Ewell and I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me god. On November 21, my big sister told us to get “ Gone to town to go get ice creams.” “She [said] Took me a whole nickel to save seb’m nickles, but I done It.” It seemed a little bit weird to me that she would give us a treat. Knowing my older sistuh she would usually hog all da money to herself. I was a bit suspicious so I told her I would take all da kids to ice cream. Right after we cleared the fence I told my oldest brother George that it was time he pulled his weight in our family, and that he should be in charge of takin’ dem kids to town for ice cream. Of course he quickly replied “Yes” (excited to finally be in charge), and immediately was barking simple orders to my younger siblings. Right after they got out of sight I snuck back to my house and peered through the window. I waited for Mayella to go to the bathroom, and that's when I snuck inside. I started by hiding inside the chiffarobe. I waited what felt like forever, and was about to give up when I finally heard some voices. It sounded like that n***** Tom Robinson. I recognized his voice cuz he would always come round and help Mayella with dem chores she always doin. Suddenly they started walking towards me. “What was he doing inside the house?”, I thought to myself. I was getting kinda nervous. I couldn't see nothin’ out of the small crack in the chiffarobe but I did hear everything that happened between Tom and Mayella, And I can tell you that my sister Mayella ain’t the victim here.
