Innocence Project Maycomb County

This is a formal review of the Ewell Household as conducted by the CPS of Maycomb County. In this review, we observed the court testimonies given and have enclosed our reports below citing our suspicion of possible abuse and neglect, and a reviewer’s notes pertaining to the two family members we believe to be involved in the main incident. We have concluded, in partnership with the Council of Higher Intelligence and Education Forum (C.H.I.E.F.), that this will be put under the category of “ain’t it” until further notice.

He has eight children, his oldest being Mayella. His wife died in 1925 at the age of forty one, giving birth to her fifth child. Robert is capable of writing, as he proved by writing out his name, and is left handed, but states “I can use one hand as good as the other”. He speaks with profanity and is seemingly quite racist and rude. He is also very negative and an alcoholic. In Mayella’s testimony after she said “He does tollable, ’cept when-”, she was asked “Except when he’s drinking?” She responded only with a nod. Robert is also a physical abuser in his house. In Mayella’s testimony when asked Robert also agreed with Sheriff Tate after he gave his testimony, even though it is wrong. He is religious, and believes in the Christian religion. He is motivat...

We believe that Tom Robinson’s constitutional rights were violated. In the sixth amendment it states “i n all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed” . When he was tried for his alleged actions of raping Mayella Ewell he was tried before a jury of all white men who were neither impartial or from the district of Mr.Robinson. "There's something in our world that makes men lose their heads—they couldn't be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life.” This clearly states that no matter what the evidence says the jury would have found Tom guilty.How can this jury impartial if they have decided before they even showed up to the court house.How can any black person be given an impartial jury if black people ...

The style of Atticus Finch in a court of law has been acclaimed for it's ability to show the true events, to step in someone's skin, and walk around in it, and to see the case from every view. Lawyers from all around have found the style of argument Atticus uses is unique. There have been studies conducted on his principles. We have made a list of five rules which we believe are integral in the case Tom Robinson v Ewell. The first rule is to listen, rather than watch to tell if someone is telling the truth. Robert E. Lee Ewell is the father or the “man” of the Ewell household, a middle aged man that’s “ family has been a disgrace to Maycomb County for three Generations”( pg. 33), as Atticus Finch said. Mr. Ewell and his eight children, Mayella Ewell is the oldest by the age of 19. According to our witness, he has never touched a hair of her head in her life. She loves her father. He is good and fair towards his daughter so she says. The relief checks are far from enough to feed the family though. Family members have said that while they starve, their father is out buying whiskey. Mayella Ewell, commented that when Mr. Ewell drinks he isn’t tolerable. This of course is an issue seeing as Mr. Ewell drinks a lot, which could lead to abuse. According to Atticus, the Ewells live like animals and haven’t done an honest day’s work ever.
