Tom is twenty five years old and lives in Maycomb, Alabama. He is married to Helen Robinson and has three kids. Tom belongs to the First Purchase African M.E. Church. He’s been in trouble before, and has received thirty days in prison before.

MENTAL STATUS EXAMINATION:
During Tom’s testimony, he seemed very honest. He answered all the questions Atticus asked him without hesitating. Tom claims that Mayella was the one who kissed him. In Tom’s testimony he said “She reaches up and kissed me side of the face. She says she never kissed a grown man before and she might as well kiss a “n”. She says what her papa do to her don’t count. She says ‘Kiss me back “n”.’ I say Miss Mayella lemme outta here and tried to run but  she got her back to the door and I’da had to push her. I didn’t want to harm her.” Because of Tom’s social standings and skin color, it is easier for the court to believe that Tom is guilty. From this quote, Tom doesn’t seem guilty. He didn’t want to have that type of interaction with Mayella, he tried to get away.

RESULTS OF EVALUATION:
Tom seems that he’s a little scared and emotionally shocked, but other then that he seems stable. Tom seems very careful with what he says and is very polite.

SUMMARY/RECOMMENDATIONS:
Overall, Tom seems like a normal person. He might seem nervous and uncomfortable at times for fear that he might say something that will get him in trouble. Tom wouldn’t want to harm anyone, sometimes things going on in the world make him mad and that is when he makes poor decisions. However, Tom was trying to make the right decision and  by pushing Mayella away from him.
